I slid down the other side of the wall and raced for the trees. My leg was aching badly now and all I could think of was getting far enough into those trees to be able to stop and give it a minute’s peace. If it had been summer I’d have thought about climbing up into the branches, but all the leaves were under my feet now in a damp, slippery yellow carpet, and the branches were bare. If I’d climbed I’d have been knocked down like a sitting quail. Both sexes wore it long and you could tell the men from the girls by their beards.

It had given me an idea. He was wearing a brown coverall and one of those flat caps that Englishmen, golfers and truck drivers wear. ’ He turned and stared at me hard.
