The class plan follows a general structure for collaborative discussion that builds on the student reading model of first reading for reaction and then reading for depth and learning. The class plan focuses students on three tasks: describe; analyze; judge. The flow sets a rough template for succeeding sessions and represents a process lesson in itself: we are not prepared to judge until we have done the hard work of describing and identifying with the character’s situation, and then analyzing important facts, events, actions, and themes.
But by and large the instructor is both leading and following the discussion, helping students to channel their comments into productive inquiry, and then to reflect on where that inquiry has led them. Such discussions, while controlled, are also often quite surprising. I have never left a session in which I was not challenged with a new point of view, or impressed with the clarity with which students hear and test each other. Individual students – and the class as a whole – increase in skill and openness as the course develops, and the last class is substantially different from the first, with more intense exchanges and well-defended arguments over moral issues and leadership concerns.
1 EVALUATING THE IMPACT OF CONTEXT (15′) In “The Moral Leader,” students learn to distinguish the overall context of a character – the general environment and its distinguishing characteristics: point in time, location, historical forces, political forces – from the particulars of the situation and immediate choices that the character faces. Decision theory researchers refer to this facility as situation awareness, and it is essential to moral decision-making. Endurance presents a particularly memorable example of the role of context and paves the way for a more nuanced exploration in the classes that follow of the relationship between context, choice, and action.
